Claude Max 20x Is Now Ultra, at 10x Pro’s Weekly Usage. The “20x” Only Ever Counted 5-Hour Sessions.
Anthropic renamed its $200 Max 20x plan to Ultra, and its help center now rates Ultra at 10x Pro’s weekly usage, not 20x. Divide each price by its weekly multiple and Pro, Max and Ultra all cost the same $20 per 1x of Pro usage.
The short version: the “20x” in Max 20x described the 5-hour session limit, not the week. The renamed Ultra plan keeps the $200 price, states its weekly allowance as 10x Pro, drops the 5-hour limit for verified accounts, and includes $200 a month in Claude API credits that don’t work in interactive Claude Code. There is no bulk discount on weekly usage at any tier: every plan works out to $20 per 1x of Pro.
What Anthropic changed
Anthropic’s Max plan used to come in 2 tiers. The version of the Max help page archived on October 26, 2026 lists them as “Max 5x: $100 per month” and “Max 20x: $200 per month.” It defines the multiples per session: Max 20x “includes 20 times the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance,” and “your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours.” It adds that Max plans “also have a weekly usage limit,” without giving a multiple for it.
The help center now has 2 separate plans. The $100 tier is just “Max,” with “five times the Pro plan’s usage every five hours and every week.” The $200 tier is “Ultra.” Its page says: “The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change. Ultra includes 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week and has no five-hour limit, for verified accounts.”
So the plan that carried a 20x label is now described with a 10x number. Anthropic’s pages don’t say the weekly allowance shrank. What changed is which limit the name points to. The old name advertised the 5-hour session. The new page advertises the week, which is the only limit a verified Ultra account still has.
The math: $20 per 1x, at every tier
Take each plan’s monthly price and divide it by the weekly multiple Anthropic now publishes. The answer is the same at every rung of the ladder.
| Plan | Price / month | Weekly usage vs Pro | 5-hour limit | API credits / month | Price per 1x of weekly usage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro (monthly) | $20 | 1x | Yes | None | $20 |
| Pro (billed annually) | $17 | 1x | Yes | None | $17 |
| Max (was Max 5x) | $100 | 5x | Yes, 5x Pro | $100 | $20 |
| Ultra (was Max 20x) | $200 | 10x | None for verified accounts | $200 | $20 |

Under the old name, the ladder looked like it rewarded the top tier. Max 5x was $100 for 5x, or $20 per 1x of session usage. Max 20x was $200 for 20x, or $10 per 1x: double the price for 4x the session allowance. On the weekly numbers Anthropic publishes now, Ultra is double the price for double the usage. The cheapest unit of Claude usage on a subscription is Pro billed annually, at $17.
What the extra $100 does buy
If the weekly unit price is flat, the case for Ultra over Max rests on 3 things in Anthropic’s pages.
No 5-hour wall, if you’re verified.Anthropic says it verifies Ultra accounts automatically “using factors like your account and payment history.” Until that happens, “a temporary limit applies.” Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn’t remove it. To check, open Settings > Usage: if there’s no Current session bar, you’re verified.
For Claude Code, this matters more than it sounds. Anthropic’s Claude Code article says Pro and Max plans have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared across Claude and Claude Code. A long agent run on Max can stop at the session wall even with plenty of weekly usage left. On a verified Ultra account, the only wall is the week.
Double the weekly pool. 10x instead of 5x. If you run several agents in parallel or let Claude Code work through long refactors, the weekly limit is the one you’ll hit, and Ultra doubles it.
$100 more in API credits. Max includes $100 a month, Ultra $200. These are real dollars on the Claude Platform, but with rules covered below.
Both Max and Ultra also have a separate weekly limit for Fable models. Anthropic’s Fable article says you can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1, and that they “use them faster than other Claude models.” On Pro, Fable runs only on pay-as-you-go usage credits.
The $200 in API credits: what they buy and where they don’t work
Anthropic’s credits article lists $100 a month for Max and $200 for Ultra. At the API list prices on Anthropic’s pricing page, here is what one month of Ultra credit buys if you spend it all on one side of the meter.
| Model | API price in / out per 1M | $200 buys (input only) | $200 buys (output only) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 / $50 | 20M tokens | 4M tokens |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 / $20 | 50M tokens | 10M tokens |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 / $10 | 100M tokens | 20M tokens |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K) | $0.10 / $0.50 | 2B tokens | 400M tokens |
Prices from Anthropic’s API pricing page, opened November 6, 2026. Token counts are our division of $200 by the list price. Haiku 5.5 costs $0.50 / $2.50 for prompts over 100K tokens.
The catch is coverage. The credits work on the Claude API and Message Batches API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. They don’t apply to “Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop, or web,” to extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork, or to Claude on Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry.
The other rules, all from the same article:
- New subscribers can claim after 7 days on the plan.
- You link one Console organization, and you can’t change it yourself.
- Credits refresh each billing cycle and don’t roll over.
- They’re spent before any credits you bought.
- Everyone with an API key in the linked organization draws from the same balance.
- They don’t change your usage limits in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork.
Read that as a rebate for people who already build on the API. If you’d spend $200 a month on the Claude API anyway, for a CI bot, a batch job or an Agent SDK service, the credit covers it and the Ultra subscription costs you nothing extra. If you only use Claude Code interactively, the credit is worth $0 to you unless you start building something.
One trap from Anthropic’s Claude Code article: if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, “resulting in API usage charges rather than using your subscription’s included usage.” If you create a key to spend your monthly credits, keep it out of the shell where you run Claude Code.
Which plan to pick
You hit no limits on Pro: stay there, and switch to annual billing for $17 a month.
You hit the 5-hour wall but rarely the weekly one: Ultra is the only plan without a session limit, for verified accounts. Max raises the session limit to 5x but keeps it.
You hit the weekly wall on Max: Ultra doubles it at the same $20 per 1x. You can also stay on Max and pay for overflow with usage credits, which Anthropic offers on paid plans.
You already pay for the Claude API: Max’s $100 or Ultra’s $200 in credits can offset that bill, as long as the work runs through the API or the Agent SDK, not interactive Claude Code.
What this means if you code with AI
Compare plans by the limit you actually hit. A plan name is a marketing number. The 20x was real, but it measured a 5-hour window. For agent work, the weekly limit is usually the one that ends your week early, and that one is 10x.
Do the per-unit math on every tool. On Anthropic’s current numbers, the top tier carries no volume discount. That’s worth checking anywhere a $200 plan sits above a $20 one: ask what the multiple applies to, and whether it’s a session, a week or a pool of credits.
Count the API credits only if you’ll spend them. They expire monthly, they skip interactive Claude Code, and they need a linked Console organization. For a developer who builds agents, they can be worth the full plan price. For everyone else, they’re a line on the pricing page.
Keep an escape hatch. Limits shared across chat, Claude Code and Cowork mean one heavy week can lock you out of all three. A second agent that runs on your own keys or a local model is cheap insurance.

Fun facts
Ultra is monthly only. If you move from an annual Pro plan with more value left than the Ultra price, Anthropic credits the remainder to your account, but only if the billing address matches.
On Google Play, an upgrade charges the full new price and turns the unused value of your old plan into extra days, so your renewal date lands a few days later than a month.
Upgrading from Max to Ultra mid-cycle is prorated, and if you’ve claimed API credits, you get prorated credits right away, then $200 each cycle after that.
